In our classroom we have many ways to encourage positive behavior through positive reinforcement.
-We will create our classroom expectations together the first week of school! When students are involved in the process of what our classroom should look like and sound like they are more likely to “buy in” to these expectations.
-Students will be expected to follow our STAR expectations throughout the day in all areas of the school. If they are not meeting those expectations they will receive reteachings, reminders, and/or possible loss of privileges.
-As a first grader, I fully understand that they are still learning about the world and how being in school works. I give MANY, MANY reminders, re-teachings and opportunities for students to change their behavior before I move towards a loss of privilege or contact parents. Please know that if you are receiving a note, email, or phone call from me it is because I have given your child numerous opportunities to show me they can fix their behavior and make better choices first.
-When a note comes home please discuss what happened with your child and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Discussing appropriate behavior with your child throughout the year helps them understand that you and I expect the same thing at school!
-If the student is hitting, bullying, disrespecting teachers/other adults in the building, or continuing inappropriate behaviors after they have discussed their behavior many times with me a major referral will be written to the principal. The referral will come home after the principal has a chance to discuss the behavior with your child. Your child may also miss some recess or Fun Friday time as a consequence.
-When a student is “caught” making a good choice or doing something helpful for another student or teacher they can earn a STAR Buck. They are able to turn these in for a chance to win raffle prizes at our monthly PBIS assemblies. Learn more about PBIS at Big Hollow by clicking here!
-We also have a classroom Marble Jar. When the class as a whole is displaying “STAR” behavior they can earn marbles for the jar. Our class also has the opportunity to earn marbles when we receive a compliment in the hallway or in a specials class. Once we have filled the jar we will have a marble jar party (game day, movie and jammies, etc.)!
